Clawson’s bar game is a magic trick disguised as a listicle. You roll in expecting one thing—maybe a shot and a handshake—and leave with a rose in your glass or a croissant that shatters like a secret.

From karaoke dens with iPad control to a Japanese patisserie where the croissants deserve a slow clap, this strip refuses to play it straight. The range runs from whiskey-soaked dives with proper beef tacos to a coffee counter that out-pastries your Detroit go-to.

One rule applies everywhere: go early, stay late, order twice. Now pick your poison.

Menu follows the seasons
Cheap garage parking nearby

Alchemi is a magic trick disguised as a bar. I walked in and a steak practically introduced itself. Bold. Confident. Then a rose appears inside my drink. A whole flower. In a glass. Absurd and wonderful. Herbs grow right by the doorway. The menu rotates with the seasons, so your favorite dish might vanish. Romantic. Cruel. The garage parking nearby is cheap, which matters when you’re spending all your money on this place. The vibe is sleek but warm. I felt like a detective solving a delicious mystery. Go early. Stay late. Order everything twice.

Warm, worn-in vibe

Gus' Snug Irish Pub is a time machine with a liquor license. The atmosphere is authentic, not staged. Worn-in wood. Low ceilings. You feel like you’re in your great-grandfather’s favorite hiding spot. The food is flown in from Ireland, which is absurd when you think about it. But you won’t think. You’ll just eat. Homemade mashed potatoes. Creamy. Buttery. Ridiculous. Live Irish music on Sundays turns the whole pub into a singalong. Strangers become friends. Friends become loud. The vibe is warm, slightly damp, and perfect. This is what hugging a bar feels like.

Tavern On the Main has a menu that reads like a dare. The Mile High Club is a sandwich that slaps you in the mouth. Politely. Their wraps are enormous. Salads look like they’re posing for a magazine cover. Joey is the culinary ambassador. He should run for mayor. The open kitchen means you watch the chaos unfold. Fresh. Fast. Furious. The Reuben, gyro, and chili are all champions. I ordered two things and regretted nothing. This is a place where you come hungry and leave suspiciously full. Bring stretchy pants. Bring a friend to carry you out. Glory awaits.

I became a regular in twenty minutes. This is my new favorite spot. Sorry to all other bars. We had a good run. But Gracie said goodnight, and I stayed until closing. What a glorious mistake.

The Nashville chicken sandwich demands attention. It screams. It sweats. You obey. The beer is cold and plentiful. The vibe is welcoming, slightly loud, but comforting. I also spotted a fried avocado. I didn’t order it. I will. It’s on my list. My future self is already grateful. Great vibes all around. This place is a crowd-pleaser without trying too hard. That’s the secret. Just do everything right. They do.

A mountain of melted cheese and happiness. Portions are generous. Prices are fair. The private back room is perfect for a secret meeting or an accidental party. The service was friendly. Lively night vibe later. I can already tell. This place transforms. Sunday is the calm before the storm. Sunday is also delicious. I will return on a Friday. I will be louder. I will eat more nachos. Spacious for a private karaoke room. That’s rare. The iPad control is easy. No weird tech problems. Just music. Screaming. Laughter. The staff are kind and professional. They didn’t judge my off-key rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody. Brave souls. This is the perfect pregame or postgame spot. Bring whiskey. Bring friends. Bring your worst singing voice. Sweet. Decadent. Cozy seating everywhere. I saw someone reading a book. Unheard of. The service varies. One day friendly. Next day grumpy. I don’t care. The coffee is the constant. The vibe is the variable. This is where I plot my next bar crawl. It’s also where I recover from the last one. A necessary stop. Bring a notebook. Stay for hours. Order a croissant. Life improves immediately.

A hum of happy people. The staff are kind and understanding. I made a mistake ordering once. They fixed it. No drama. Sweet and savory pastries abound. You can eat breakfast, lunch, and dessert. They know what they’re doing. This is the best in Royal Oak. A bold claim. I stand by it. The decor is unique. Odd. Memorable. Fresh eats everywhere. You can taste the freshness. It’s like eating a farmers market. But with more sauce. I ordered a sandwich. I nearly cried. Then I ordered dessert. I did cry. Little tears of joy. Visit this place. Just be patient. Highlights
Terrible service, rude staff
Unclear menu pricing
Overpriced, under-topped hot dogs
No ranch, stale sides
Worst coney dogs in state

Royal Inn Bar is a war crime in bar form. Terrible service. Rude staff. I felt unwelcome. The menu pricing is unclear. A mystery. But not the fun kind. Hot dogs are overpriced and under-topped. Sad little sausages. No ranch. Stale sides. Actually stale. How is that possible? And then the coney dogs. The worst in the state. That’s not hyperbole. That’s evidence. I left hungry. Annoyed. Somewhat angry. This place should be studied. Not to improve. Just to understand. How does it stay open? I do not know. Do not go. Unless you enjoy disappointment. Then. Go. But be warned. You’ll regret it. I sure did.
